Hey {{first name | there}},

This week's issue is a Box 14 W-2 guide. We'll cover what it is, the codes list, instructions, and more.

Let's get right into it.

TL;DR

  • There is still no official IRS code list for Box 14a. Your employer writes the label.

  • Box 14b holds up to two Treasury Tipped Occupation Codes. Those codes pair with Box 12 code TP (cash tips) for the qualified tip deduction.

  • Most 14a amounts are informational on the federal return. Union dues generally stay informational. Mandatory state disability like CASDI can show up on Schedule A, subject to the SALT cap.

  • Qualified overtime now belongs in Box 12 under code TT, not in Box 14.

Why Box 14 keeps confusing people

Box 12 uses letter codes the IRS assigns. Code W is an HSA contribution. Code DD is employer-sponsored health coverage. Software usually recognizes those automatically.

Box 14a works the other way. The IRS does not publish a standard shorthand, so one shop writes CASDI and another writes CA SDI. Same withholding. Different label. That is why tax software often asks you to type the description instead of picking a code.

The 2026 form makes the split visible. Box 14a is still one open block. Box 14b sits under it as a narrower field for Treasury Tipped Occupation Codes. Those codes exist because the qualified tip deduction under Internal Revenue Code section 224 needs a way to show whether the job is on Treasury's tipped occupation list.

A blank Box 14a is normal. It means your employer had nothing extra to report there. A blank box is not, by itself, a broken W-2.

What 14b is for

Box 14b is not another catch-all. Employers report up to two Treasury Tipped Occupation Codes for employees whose cash tips appear in Box 12 under code TP. Those codes help determine whether tips qualify for the deduction on Schedule 1-A.

If Box 14b shows code 000 by itself, the employee instructions treat those tips as not eligible for the deduction. Social Security and Medicare still apply to tip income. The deduction reduces federal income tax only.

1. If you get a W-2, match 14a to a pay stub. Copy the exact label into tax software. Do not invent a Box 12 code for it. If the label is opaque, ask HR now, not in April.

2. If you issue W-2s, lock the 2026 map. Keep 14a labels plain and consistent year to year (Union Dues, CA SDI). Put Treasury occupation codes only in 14b. Move qualified overtime to Box 12 code TT. Put cash tips in Box 12 code TP.

3. Keep year-to-date numbers clean now. Box 14 is easier to fill when the stubs already show the same deductions. Create the stub when you pay so January is a copy job, not a reconstruction.

January 2027 is when 2026 W-2s go out. The cheap time to fix labels and tip codes is this quarter, while payroll is still running the same way every week.
